As the #1 Engineering and Technology Faculty in Australia*, UNSW Engineering is always looking at ways to optimise the educational experience for our students and ensure our graduates have the knowledge and skills required to succeed in today’s job market.
UNSW is pleased to announce that enhancements originally planned for Term 2, 2024, have been brought forward to Term 1, 2024 for the benefit of all T1 applicants and offer holders. This will result in faster admission turnaround and provide greater access to two of our premier programs.
Rest assured, given that entry requirements are now more flexible than previous requirements, UNSW does not anticipate any new or current 2024 applicant being disadvantaged by these updates. FAQs for any T1 applications and offer holders are at the bottom of this article. All applicants and offer holders are also receiving similar communication.
❯❯❯ What's changed?
From Term 1, 2024, the Master of Engineering Science and Master of Information Technology have greater flexibility in entry, improved specialisation structures and more clarity for recognition of prior learning. Please see a summary of changes below.
Master of Information Technology

New Entry Requirements
Applicants will no longer require 3 maths courses. Admission to the MIT will require only a 3-year Bachelor Degree in a cognate discipline with a minimum 65% average.

More Flexible Entry
If a student does not have a cognate discipline, they may still gain entry to the Master of IT without extending the length of their degree. This is through a 2-year pathway consisting of a Grad Certificate that transitions to the Master of IT.

New Specialisation
A new Cyber Security Specialisation is now available.

Updated Entry Requirements
More specialisations now accept undergraduate Engineering degrees or science degrees from different cognate areas from the desired area of study.

More Flexible Entry
If a student does not have the relevant cognate discipline, they may still gain entry to the MEng Sci specialisation of their choice without extending the length of their degree. This is through a 2-year pathway consisting of a Grad Certificate that transitions to the MEng Sci.

Industry Relevant Specialisations
Updated specialisations with the creation of “Mechanical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing” to replace “Mechanical Engineering” and “Manufacturing Engineering and Management” and updating “Chemical Process Engineering” to “Chemical Engineering.”
Petroleum Engineering has been removed to make way for a re-designed specialisation coming soon.

Q
How do these changes affect current applicants and offer holders?
A
Any 2024 applicant who already has an offer:Offer still stands, including any RPL they were given. No action needed.
Any 2024 applicant without an offer:Will be assessed according to the new entry requirements. Note some students who were previously ineligible, may now be eligible to gain entry through the Graduate Certificate to Master pathway.
Q
I have a student who was previously denied an offer, but may now be eligible to gain entry under the updated entry requirements. What should I do?
A
Any application that was denied prior to Tuesday, 27 September 2023, due to the cognate or maths requirement not being met, is eligible to be re-assessed under the new entry requirements. To be re-assessed, students should submit a request to be considered under the new curriculum via an admission enquiry.
Q
Will the new 2-year Grad Cert/Master pathways be packaged?
A
Students who are offered the new 2-year Grad Cert/Master pathway will have a full offer to the Grad Cert and a provisional offer to the Master's program. They will also receive 2 COEs. As a student reaches the end of the Grad Cert they’ll be prompted to transfer to the Master’s Program.
Q
Do the new entry Master of IT requirements apply to the dual Master of IT/Master of Commerce?
A
Yes. However, at this stage, students can only enter the Master of IT/Master of Commerce via direct entry and not through a GC Pathway.
