The differences are listed below:
• Government Schools: Schools that are controlled by the government and provide free education to Australian. International students are required to pay relevant tuition fee. International student recruitment is generally central managed by one organisation.
• Non-Government Schools: Schools that are NOT controlled by the government, both Australian students and international students are required to pay tuition fee. Some schools are affiliated with a specific religion like Christianity.
Qualifications under Schools Sector:
• Preschool: an optional study where the student between the ages of 3-4 can study. The age requirement varies between the States and Territories in Australia. The duration is one year.
• Preparatory Year: It is also known as Kindergarten, Transition, Reception or Primary depending on which States or Territories you are. The duration is one year. The age of the student is between 4 to 6 years old. • Primary School: This is part of the compulsory education in Australia. The duration can be between 6 to 7 years. The age of the student is between 5 to 12 years old. Some schools are girls only, some are boys only and some are co-ed schools. There is no final examination across the entire state or territories at the end of primary school
• Secondary School: This is also part of the compulsory education in Australia. The duration can be between 5 to 6 years. The age of the student is between 12 to 18 years old. Some schools are girls only, some are boys only and some are co-ed schools. International students are normally required to meet the English requirement prior starting the formal education at secondary level. Students can select the subjects base on personal interest and preference. Some schools are known for a specific area / subjects including second language, music, sports, science etc.
• Junior High School: This is referred to Year 7 to 10. There will be some compulsory subjects like English, Mathematics, Science and Study of Society and Environment (SOSE).
• Senior High School: This is referred to Year 11 and 12. Students are allowed to select their own subjects depending on their interests and/or their future study plan. At the end of Year 12, the student will receive a final result/score (The examination system works differently in different States or Territories and this score is called OP in Queensland) and a Senior Certificate of Secondary Education (The certificate is named differently, the final certificate is called the Certificate of Education in Queensland) The final result/score will enable the students to advance their study in Australia by applying for tertiary study.
